EUROBASKET 2009: Bokis letter of appreciation...


About a month after The Eurobasket 2009 there are still many occasions when I think about this tournament. I am sure other players and fans are doing the same. I feel that I should mention and thank some people that helped us make the biggest result in Slovenian National Team basketball history. Of course we all know that we could do better, but knowing the circumstances and the fact that we gave our 100% we have to be satisfied.
First, I would like to thank the fans. Those of you who were cheering for us in Poland were phenomenal. You were by far the loudest and you are the biggest reason for our success. It was great to see the stands full of Slovenia fans, all wearing green and white. You were helping us when we struggled and gave us power when we were crushing our opponents. Thanks also go out to those who watched our games on TV, whether it was in Slovenia or somewhere else. We players could feel that we had a huge number of people cheering for us and that was a great feeling. But we were all surprised when we returned back home. A big crowd of people was waiting for us at the airport and even more people gathered in the center of Lubiana. When I stepped on the podium that they put together for us and I saw a huge crowd cheering for us I had a hard time holding back tears and I wasnt alone. Especially Id like to thank a young kid, who gave me his flag so I could proudly wear it across my shoulders. It was unforgettable.

You have to know that there are many people "behind the scenes" of our success. I said it at many occasions that the people at Slovenian Basketball Federation have been working extremely hard to help us players. Many of those were with us the whole time. Some of them we never had a chance to meet, but we know they were there, working for us. Throughout training camp and the tournament we had many injuries and it couldve been even worse if it wasnt for our trainers and our doctor. They were doing all they could to keep us healthy.

Coaching staff did a great job and I am hoping to see all the coaches and assistants back in the next tournaments. I believe I have learned a lot during this summer and they are the reason for it.

Finally, I would like to thank my teammates for giving their best. I really enjoyed playing with all of them. I know, that we all have long seasons ahead of us and because of a long summer many of us have injuries that need to be healed. But I cant avoid to think that this generation has a few more chances to do something big again. Hopefully that will be next year at the World Championship in Turkey. Of course with many of Slovenian fans being with us again - the best fans in the world!
