110th Government Session: The Government Guarantees Funding for Eurobasket 2013

If Slovenia’s bid to host the European Basketball Championship in 2013 succeeds, the Government will provide the funds for the guarantees and fees paid to FIBA Europe.

If the bid of the Basketball Federation of Slovenia succeeds, the Government will provide the funds totalling €750,000 to pay the guarantee for the organisation of the championship by 17 December 2010. In this case the Government will also provide €3,000,000 to pay for the fees for the organisation of the championship to FIBA Europe, which will be paid in 2011, 2012 and by 15 March 2013. This sum includes the funds for the guarantee (€750,000).

At its previous session, the Government discussed the proposal of the Basketball Federation of Slovenia, and expressed its expectation for a better negotiating position of the Basketball Federation of Slovenia (BFA) regarding FIBA Europe. The BFA has managed to reduce the fee paid to FIBA Europe from €4,000,000 to €3,000,000, while the funds used to pay for official partnership have been lowered from €4,000,000 to €3,500,000.

With todays decision, the Government will provide the funds for the guarantee and fee paid to FIBA Europe if the Basketball Federation of Slovenia’s bid to host the European Basketball Championship in 2013 succeeds, which will be on the agenda of the FIBA Europe executive committee in Munich on 4 and 5 December 2010

The event is financially attractive, and would contribute significantly to the recognition and promotion of Slovenia abroad, while increasing the popularity of basketball in Slovenia.
